Past Initiatives
Research Collaboration (2001)
The Business-Higher Education Forum created the Research Collaboration Initiative to document "best practices" and to develop guidelines for conducting university-industry research partnerships. The initiative also sought to serve as an instructive model for the university and corporate sectors and for public policy makers.
Hank McKinnell, former Chairman of the Board of Pfizer Inc, and Nils Hasselmo, former President of Association of American Universities, co-chaired the Research Collaboration Initiative.
The initiative's research and findings were reported in the 2001 report, Working Together, Creating Knowledge: The University-Industry Research Collaboration Initiative (pdf). The report sets forth recommendations for improving the quality and quantity of university-industry collaborations and addresses issues that challenge partnerships between industry and universities, such as: intellectual property; licensing; conflicts of interest; confidentiality; indirect costs; and background rights.
