The STEM Research and Modeling Network

Mission

The STEM Research and Modeling Network (SRMN) is hosted by BHEF and dedicated to fostering the development and use of predictive modeling tools in the fields of education research and policy as a way of strengthening student interest, participation and achievement in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The SRMN includes a diverse array of individuals and organizations from K-12 education, higher education, business and industry, foundations, non-profits and government agencies.  The SRMN welcomes practitioners and administrators from all levels of the education spectrum, as well as researchers from a wide range of disciplinary fields and system modeling experts to participate in its activities.

The STEM Research and Modeling Network bring these groups together to work toward a shared goal: improving STEM education.  It doing so, the SRMN provides:

  • researchers with opportunities to bring theory to practice
  • policymakers with a means to assess the potential impact of legislation
  • practitioners with guides to what may produce results, and
  • funders with a gauge of effective and successful education investments.

Activities

The STEM Research and Modeling Network plays a central role in advancing the BHEF U.S. Stem Education Model developed by the Raytheon Company.  The SRMN also participates in developing the research agenda required for model enhancements.

In addition to the model, the SRMN is devoted to adding different kinds of modeling methods and tools to improve education decision-making.  Members of the SRMN provide the technical talent needed to maintain each model, such as configuration control, resolution of coding and other technical errors, and maintenance of open-source licenses and access.

The SRMN also fosters the growth of a user community that includes researchers, practitioners, policymakers and funders by providing technical support, deploying collaborative network tools and convening symposia and workshops.

How to Participate

A Google Group has been set up for the SRMN, which provides a space for a message board, document sharing, member profiles if desired, and other useful applications.

The SRMN Google Group is open to all interested parties, but it does require an initial registration. Find the sign-in page and instructions here: http://groups.google.com/group/srmn.
